Action - Sometime during January, mealtime

He spotted her when he arrived for dinner, coming through another entrance to the dining hall. Gave her a little wave before he approached, to gauge her reaction. They hadn’t been running into one another much since the last time — which, in Cassidy’s view, had ended a touch awkwardly — and he wanted to make sure, before they spoke again, that she actually wanted to.

Cassidy, likewise, was worried that he’d frightened her off. Everything had been just about perfect up until the moment she’d fallen asleep. What sort of man didn’t want to sleep next to the woman he’d just bedded a couple of times? It would’ve been fairly easy for her to conclude that he was scum.

But now, she was smiling. So far, so good.

“Yeah, I’m all right,” he said. “Rang in the new year. Took a few drugs. Met a death god. Otherwise, it’s all been normal-ish. Oh,” he interjected on himself, snapping his fingers, “did you see the announcement about the tattoo parlor that’s just opened?”

“Oh, you know Matt!” Pleasant surprise, as if the favored weren’t a small enough group that it was easy to know most of them. “Yes. He’s the one that hooked me up with the opium. Actual opium. Brilliant. Not had a chance at that for half a century, at least.”

Which was likely to bring up the question of how old he actually was, if she took him literally. But he had every intention of getting to that in a moment.

“I would love to come along for your first session.” He'd been planning to ask, if she hadn’t brought it up first. “For just now — d’you wanna sit down together?” he asked, nodding toward the dining tables.

“Oh,” he said as he settled next to her, “the umbrella of opiates is a large one. You’ve got your morphine, your codene, your oxycodone... heroin’s the heavy-hitter, most places. Knocks you back, but it’s synthesized, right? Pure, natural opium, you don’t find that much in America these days.”

There was a platter of fruit and cheeses in the center of the table. Cassidy moved a few morsels onto his plate, along with a good piece of crusty bread, but he didn’t start eating yet. Instead, he turned to her.

“Look. I’m sorry for not callin’ you up after how we left things. I fouled things up, and I thought maybe you might think I was bein’ standoffish. But the truth is, Airy, I like you. I like you quite a lot. And it wasn’t fair of me to vanish on you like that.”

“Do you not think you’d want to do that again? If you’re still tryin’ to get your powers back...?”

‘Friends’ was nice, but it was hard to know what ‘friends’ meant here — since, as she’d eloquently put it, the dynamics were somewhat fucked. And as nice as friends might be, even now, he couldn’t help thinking about how soft her lips were.

"You play the violin? Lovely."

He didn't mind at all that she hadn't asked for her powers back. In fact, the realization came with a tiny ping of relief. The longer she delayed in regaining her abilities, the longer they could use that as an excuse for having sex. The longer they could avoid exploring the idea that there was some other reason.

Not that Cassidy was actually thinking that. Not on a level above the subconscious.

"Never learned an instrument meself." He turned to his plate, picked up a bit of cheese to take a bite out of it. Leaving the serious conversation aside, at least for the moment.

Cassidy hummed around a mouthful of food.

"There's loads of Irish ballads that are dead easy to play, if you don't know 'em already. Molly Malone. The Rising of the Moon. Ooh. Tone's Grave. That's a fine one for violin. Really tugs at the heartstrings, that one."

He could have rattled off a half-dozen more, at least, but that was likely good enough for a start.

"I could sing 'em for 'ya, if that'd help."

“I am used to a more private audience, to be honest,” he said, his smile wide and playful. “Next time we’re alone...?”

So they were doing this. Which meant there was something else he ought to do, before they got any further.

“Actually, there’s somethin’ else you ought to know about me, that don’t have much to do with me sleepin’ habits... you know that friend you mentioned? The one with the mad da?” Cassidy lifted and lowered his eyebrows, a silent do you know what I mean? “I’ve... got somethin’ in common with that friend of yours, as it happens.”

Ha. Cassidy didn't laugh out loud, but there was a glimmer in his eyes that said he appreciated the humor.

“No, me da was all right, actually. Worked himself to the bone and drank like a bloody fish, but at least he didn’t go around kidnappin’ people.”

He sat up a little straighter, one hand on his knee like he was bracing himself.

“What I mean is, I’m a vampire.”

Even remembering what she'd said about her friend, even knowing already how kind and trusting she was, he hadn't quite expected oh, okay.

That was the first reason he paused. The second was the time needed for a bit of mental math: she knew Matt, but didn't know what allowed the favored vampires to walk around in the sun. Either Matt hadn't told her what he was, or he hadn't told her about the bracelets.

"Fairy magic," was as specific as Cassidy decided to be. "The fairies worked it so that I could go outside, unprotected, in daylight."

He tipped his head, gave a thoughtful frown. Normally, he'd assume she'd have other questions, but somehow, he got the feeling that wasn't the case.

"Anyway, I thought you might like to know." Even if it was no big deal.

“I hear there’s one every mornin’.”

Somehow, Cassidy realized, he’d gone several weeks here without witnessing a sunrise. It simply hadn’t occurred to him. Force of habit, probably. He might know it wouldn’t hurt him, might go walking around in the sun on a daily basis, but those learned instincts were a bastard to break.

He thought he might do it once on his own, before watching a sunrise with Airy or anyone else. It seemed like something that ought to be more personal.

“What I really miss,” he said as he got back to his meal, “is the beach. Always used to go swimmin’ in the summertime, as a boy... somethin’ to look forward to when the weather starts to warm up.”

"Too forward? No, I wouldn't consider it too forward of 'ya to ask." Cassidy was of a mind that asking for what one wanted should never be considered a breach of boundaries.

It was however, a bit surprising.

"Sounds terribly keen, though. Are you lookin' to start a quartet?" To go along with her violin. A bit of teasing to pass the time while he decided how to answer.

God, but she was an innocent — a thought which, once he'd had it, made Cassidy less inclined to take her up on her offer. This could easily go tits-up in the wrong sort of way if it went too fast.

He lowered a hand to rest on her knee, under the table. Looked down to meet her eyes with his.

"I am flattered by your enthusiasm, Airy. But maybe let's try just bein' friends for..."

On the other hand, he didn't want to put things off too much.

"...let's call it twenty-four hours or so, before we go makin' any more sexy plans, eh? Doubt the fairies'll be sendin' either of us home before then."
